You know the list

A problem that keeps getting fixed has never been diagnosed.

There is a difference between the network working and the network being understood. You can go years without noticing which one you have.

Every one of these was closed. That is the problem: a closed ticket and a solved problem are not the same record.

Three layers down

The wireless is where it shows, not where it starts.

Each answer uncovers the next question. We keep going until we reach the one that explains the problem, because stopping at the first is how it comes back.

01
The symptom
Wireless is down. Someone comes out, adjusts something, the ticket closes. It works today.
02
The problem underneath
You stop expecting a fix and start planning around it. Staff build a workaround for each one, and after a while the workarounds are the system.
03
And the one underneath that
Nobody in your building can tell you what is actually on your network. Not the count — the map.
An undocumented network can't be defended. Not because the tools are missing — because the map is.
Segmentation, monitoring, incident response, insurance questionnaires, an auditor's evidence request: every one starts from a diagram somebody has to produce.

How we work

We map it first.

Big Sky started in cybersecurity and digital forensics: reconstructing what happened on a network after an incident, from logs, traffic and configuration, with documented chain of custody for insurers, counsel and courts.

That is the same skill as finding out why your wireless drops on Thursdays. It is the discipline of not stopping at the plausible explanation.

Most network work in this market responds to the symptom. We start from the map.
The assessment

A defined piece of work, with a price on it.

Up to a week, on site or remote. From $1,500, credited against the fix if you hire us to do it.

What we do
·Walk the building and test where it breaks
·Inventory what is connected, wired and wireless
·Open the firewall and account for every rule
·Trace the segmentation, or find there isn't any
·Read the logs that exist, note the ones that don't
What you get, in writing
✓A network diagram you own
✓Findings ranked by risk
✓What each fix would cost
✓What we would do first, and why
✓Yours whether or not you hire us

The work itself

What we get called to help out with typically.

Wireless that fails in one area
Weak signal, interference, or a channel plan nobody revisited after the office moved around.
VPN and remote access
Drops and timeouts — and who has access, whether it is still appropriate, and whether it is tied to your identity system or a spreadsheet.
Firewall rules and review
Most firewalls we open have rules nobody can account for, including ports left open by a project that finished years ago.
Switching and segmentation
Flat networks are the most common serious finding we make. When everything reaches everything, one compromised machine does too.
Multisite and new locations
A second office, clinic or job site, designed properly rather than extended from the first one and hoped for.
Monitoring and logging
So a failure produces an alert you see first, rather than a phone call from an employee.

Honest fit

Where we're not the right fit.

Two cases, said on the first call rather than after it.

01

You want it fixed today for the lowest number

An assessment costs more up front than a callout. If today is the constraint, call a break fix shop — and if it happens again, call us.
02

You want the network fixed but nothing to change

Sometimes the cause is a policy or an access practice, and the fix needs a decision from you rather than a purchase.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How fast do you respond?

Our median first response for security issues is 10 minutes, measured in our own system over the last 90 days. It's a measured number, not a target, and a fair question to ask any provider you're evaluating.

Do we have to sign a contract to get network help?

No. The assessment is a defined piece of work with a price on it. Ongoing support is a separate decision you make afterward, with the diagram already in your hands either way.

Do we have to buy new equipment?

No. We'll tell you what's past end of manufacturer support and why that's a security problem rather than a sales opportunity, but nothing about working with us requires a purchase.

Can you work alongside our current IT provider?

Yes, routinely. We hand the diagram and findings to whoever manages your network day to day, and work alongside them on the fix if you want us to.

What if the assessment doesn't find the cause?

Then we say so, tell you what it would take to isolate it — usually monitoring over a period rather than a single visit — and what that costs. We can't promise a diagnosis on the first visit, and you'd be right to be skeptical of anyone who does. What you keep either way is the diagram and the findings.

Is this a security thing or a network thing?

Both, and that's the point. Cybersecurity Audit →Penetration Testing →

NEXT STEP

Book a network assessment.

Tell us what keeps coming back and roughly how many sites and users you have. We'll tell you what the assessment would cover and what it costs before you commit to anything.

You keep the network diagram either way, including if you decide to hand it to the provider you already have.
